Text: "Jesus said to her, 'You are right when you say you have no husband. The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband'" John 4:17-18.
Jesus' interview with the woman at the well is exceptionally revealing. She would seem to be a woman of loose morals. Had there been five divorces? We are not told. Was her current live-in a common-law husband--if there was such a thing in Jesus' time? (Shacking up is not new!)
God hates divorce. Apart from unfaithfulness, the marriage bond, according to scripture, cannot be broken. In the case of the woman at the well, there had evidently been serial unfaithfulness. And when Jesus spoke to her, she was, as we say, shacking up.
But thank God, she was not beyond reach, nor beyond the Holy Spirit's conviction. Realizing that Jesus knew her heart and all about her shady life, this woman nevertheless becomes a spokeswoman for the One she deemed to be the Messiah.
A compromised and fallen women? Obviously. But she had a hungry heart, and she quickly became a powerful witness. All this happened while the priggish disciples were still full of unasked questions such as "Why, Jesus, are you even talking to her?"
Hungry hearts, no matter the situation, do get to Jesus--any way they can.
