Some are Sick Because God Plans a Party

Text: "'Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?' 'Neither this man nor his parents sinned,' said Jesus, 'but this happened so that the work of God might be displayed in his life'" John 9:2-3.

"Why?" is an oft-stated human question --especially when it comes to illness. From this text it is obvious that not every sickness has a sinful cause, even though some of the Corinthians were sick and some had died because of abuses at the Lord's Table. Further, Ananias and Saphira each received a death sentence for their duplicity in the early church.

Sometimes, however, sicknesses are allowed for a higher purpose. Yes, there are biblical reasons for sickness.

Coming to this conclusion is a step of maturity in the Christian life. Only the naïve and untaught still ask the "who sinned" question. It soon becomes clear that the man in the text was blind because God planned a party! His glory was about to be displayed.

Some today, too, are healed because God plans to get a lot of glory for His name!
